What a wonderful world

Expansion of biofuel production would lead to substantial declines in calorie availability in some countries, according to IFPRI's IMPACT model. If biofuel production undergoes a drastic increase, calorie availability in Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to fall by more than 8 percent in 2020, and the number of malnourished children in the region is projected to increase by 3 million. The World Bank offers a sobering comparison: 450 pounds of maize can be converted into enough ethanol to fill the 25-gallon tank of an SUV with pure ethanol one time—or used to provide enough calories to feed one person for a year.

Large scale production of biofuel has put tremendous pressure on global grain prices. In the short- and medium-term, ethanol can do little to affect oil consumption, but the diversion of grain from food to fuel has already exerted a widespread and profound ripple effect on various food commodities.
The United Sates produced 3.9 billion gallons of ethanol in 2006 and expanded its output to 6.5 billion in 2007. This took millions of hectares of land out of food production. In 2007, 54 percent of the world's corn was grown in the USA, and 38 percent of US corn crop ended up in gas tanks instead of stomachs. The amount of corn required to produce a gallon ethanol is enough to feed a human being for two weeks. Corn is mainly used to feed chickens and cattle, so the price of poultry, eggs, beef, and dairy products will continue to rise.

High on Oxfam's list of recommendations is an end to current biofuels mandates in rich countries, widely recognized as fuelling price rises and speculation. Experts have predicted that biofuels targets may result in an extra 600m people being hungry by 2025.

Biofuels tend to allocate productive resources (e.g. land, labour, capital) away from the production of food crops into the production of feedstocks for biofuels. Biofuels may reduce the availability of food for nutritional use, because ‘effective’ demand for grains, sugar or oils and other basic food staples as feedstock for fuel production is able to outbid that for food. This new source of demand has been playing an important role in influencing prices. Among all major food and feed commodities, additional demand for maize (a feedstock for the production of ethanol) and rapeseed (a feedstock for the production of biodiesel) have had the strongest impacts on prices.

For example, out of nearly 40 million tonnes increase in total world maize utilization in 2007, almost 30 million tonnes were absorbed by ethanol plants alone. Most of this expansion occurred in the United States, the world’s largest producer and exporter of maize. It explains the steep rise in international maize prices observed since the beginning of 2007. The intensity of the price reaction was also related to the fast pace (mostly within 2-3 years) in which this new demand materialized and to its concentration in the United States (more than 90 percent). Globally, some 12 percent of total world maize utilization was used for ethanol in 2007, compared to 60 percent for animal feed. In the United States, maize utilized to produce ethanol represented around 30 percent of its total domestic utilization.

Other organisations, such as the International Monetary Fund and International Food Policy Research Institute, the Washington-based think-tank, have estimated biofuel’s contribution to current higher food prices at 20-30 per cent.

Some top international food scientists Tuesday recommended halting the use of food-based biofuels, such as ethanol, saying it would cut corn prices by 20 percent during a world food crisis.

Another thing I have noticed is always that for many people, a bad
credit score is the results of circumstances further than their control.
As an example they may be really saddled with illness and because of this
they have excessive bills going to collections. It might be due to a work loss or inability
to work. Sometimes divorce or separation can send the financial circumstances in the wrong direction.
